Here’s Ten Reasons Why:
10. No danger of Lice. The next six months of The World Race will have me in several countries where the prospect of getting head lice is a pretty valid reality. With no hair, I’m much safer.
9. It’s much cooler. As my buddy, Lynn Reagan, puts it, “I’ve been sweating since October 1!” This is no joke! Everywhere we go, it’s just plain hot. Without hair I’ll be way more temperate!
8. Ready time is far shorter. We literally live on a “fly by the seat of your pants” time schedule. You never know when a contact is going to be ready and expect you to jump up and go with him/her for whatever needs doing. This way, I can grab a cap and go!
7. My hair is already falling out anyway. One thing that a lot of girls on the Race run into is hair loss, usually due to vitamin deficiencies because of our diets. Several of us have noticed more hair than usual falling out all over the place (don’t worry, I have a ton of replacement, so it’s not all that big of a loss!) But hey, go big or go home, right?
6. Less time in the shower. Most of the countries we visit already deal with water shortages, and if you have read some of my earlier blogs you know that the water we DO usually shower with is frigid! This way, I’ll be killing two birds with one stone. I’ll use less water and I won’t be quite so miserable every time I bathe!
5. My pack will weigh less! Shampoo and Conditioner (and mousse and gel and smoothing lotion) are REALLY heavy items, and sometimes it’s hard to choose between what to throw out when I need to cut weight. Without need for hair care, I’m home free!
4. I’ll get to try knew looks. I’ve had long hair for my entire life. Sometimes change is good. I love women who are confident enough in themselves to wear scarves, hats, wigs, etc., or to even sport the bald look. And hey, it’ll grow back!
3. Maybe Punk Rock really is my style? You know you’d love to see me sporting a Mohawk… or spikes… or any random do! 😉
2. God has been speaking to me about doing this since before I even left! No joke. My Aunt Karen will tell you that I was considering doing this in May of last year, feeling God call me to do something extreme for my own fund raising efforts. That said, I reached “fully funded” and didn’t need to shave anything, so I thought I was off the hook. Not so much. God started speaking to me about this again when he brought me to a verse I had underlined last summer:
“Before he (Paul) sailed, he had his hair cut off at Cenchrea because of a vow he had taken.” –Acts 18:18b
I made a vow to follow God in insurmountable ways, to incredible lengths! If I’m going to live that out, I’ve got to really live that out.
1. “Just Love” is worth it! These ladies are fantastic Women of God and I am so thankful for the gift of their friendship and sisterhood. No part of me wants to lose that; I fully intend (if it is God’s Will) to see each of them finish this Race with me, side by side, hand in hand.
Monica, Karen, Laura, Kirby, Shelli and Elizabeth… you rock my socks!

(The "Just Love" girls modeling the many different looks I can sport once I shave my head!!!)
So if you want to donate, here are the stats:
Monica Pennington – Still needs approximately $4000.00
Laura Economides – Still needs approximately $1200.00
Kirby McErlane – Still needs approximately $1300.00
Karen Thyer – Still needs approximately $300.00
Elizabeth Cloutier and Shelli Daniels are FULLY FUNDED! YAY!!! If you would like to donate to any of these girls, you can do so by visiting any of their World Race blogsites, and from there you can donate online. Another options is contacting me, and I will help you get your support where it needs to go! Thanks so much!
