I helped again today in the kitchen
of the God’s Child project.
Unfortunately bread, black beans, and some kind of vitamin enriched milk
was on the menu today, so I was not able to show off my mad tortilla making
skills. While we washed dishes, Joy
commented on the lack of uneaten food we threw away. There was barely enough waste to fill two of
the small bowls. If black beans and vitamin enriched milk was served in the States
I don’t think any of the kids would eat it let alone clean their plates. The God’s Child project receives donations of
vegetables for the student’s meals. What
they do not use throughout the week they distribute to the mother’s that come
to a mother’s meeting on Friday’s. No food
goes to waste. It came time to prepare
lunch so we sat and peeled potatoes then snapped the ends off of green beans. Some of the potatoes were smaller than golf
balls and hardly seemed worth the time to peel, but we did not waste and peeled
anyway. We only snapped the very ends
off of the green beans trying to keep as much of the bean in tact, so the
edible parts would not go to waste. Even
brooms that are worn down to a couple inches of bristles are not thrown
away. Instead a towel is draped over the
broom to create a mop. I love the
ingenuity and care that is put into using what is useable. Once again I came to minister through
serving, but I have learned from those I am assisting.
This afternoon I had time to visit
Angelica’s store. I have built quite a
good relationship with her, so I felt okay in pulling out my camera. We spent the afternoon snapping pictures
together and making videos. Angelica
pranced around the store posing and putting on shirts to wear in the
pictures. Every time we looked at the
pictures and watched the videos, tears would form in Angelica’s eyes and she
would say, “Friend, I am going to miss you, how sad that you are leaving.” I would assure her that we still have two
more days to spend time together, but I cannot deny that I am really sad about
saying goodbye to Angelica. We have become
fast friends through our shared love for Our Heavenly Father. I am really going to miss plopping down on
the stool in her store to listen to her melodic Spanish allowing the tensions
of the day to release through shared laughter.

This evening we were blessed by a
meal of vegetable soup made by our Guatemalan mom, Ginny. It was amazing to receive a meal full of such
nutrients. We ate on the roof as the sun
went down and the stars emerged. For the
first time I was able to see tinted red Mars and hundreds of other sparkling stars. I just love the world and the universe that
the Lord has created.
