Here is a list of things that seem to be typically in my
life in Peru (and yes I found it easier to just tell people here my name was
Dory again).
-People will typically call me Doris, as if I am a 90 year
old woman
-I typically feel like an old man carrying around my
handkerchief to cough and blow my nose into
-Someone on the street will typically yell “Hello!” after we
have walked 10 feet past them (it must take awhile to translate “Hola”)
-It is typical for me to eat a big breakfast, a large lunch,
and huge supper (lunch and dinner include rice).
-Typically I have no idea where we are going or for how long
and then I realize I have left my toilet paper in my other bag (if there is a
public bathroom around you can bet there is no toilet paper).
-Walking a mile to the church every day is typically a game
of “Frogger” (meaning you must dodge all cars, moto taxis, and taxis.
– When taking my bucket shower of cold water I typically
sing to myself “Eye of the Tiger” to pump myself up to dump the cold water on
top of my head.
-While in the bathroom it is typical for me to see all of my
teammates at some point while my one stop in.
-At school I have hands in my hair, up my shirt, in my
armpits, and holding my hands, typically all at the same time.
-When surrounded by kids at school you can typically guess
that I am singing to them, playing tag, arm wrestling the 10 year old boys
(only defeated once) or trying to tell them to stop yelling at me because I
don’t know Spanish!
– In the morning when I wake up it is typical for me to
search for my ear plugs which I have lost at some point during the night and
then proceed to laugh as two of my roommates talk about their dreams.
Thanks for reading! I assure you there are many more
“typical moments” I could share with you but I will wait to do it in person
someday J
. God bless you!
p.s. Thank you for the prayers! I feel so blessed J
