Today on our search for Unsung Heroes, we talked with a man named Giacomo. He is Costa Rican and his wife is Dutch. They work for an organization that pretty much everyone is familiar with called YWAM. When the meeting began we started to tell him about the World Race, but he was already extremely knowledgeable about it and seemed to know a lot about what we do, how it works, and what we are about. He then mentioned that they have hosted World Race teams many years ago when it was starting out, but has since lost contact with them. He has a large piece of property where teams from all over come and stay and do ministry. Right now he had around 150 people on base including youth groups, specialized teams, families, and even individual missionaries. He expressed his joy and heart for the community and with each word he spoke we saw more and more of his heart and passion for Jesus Christ. He explained that he loved having world race teams at the base and was hoping to get back into better contact and communications with the organization so that more teams could come to the camp.
This specific YWAM base does many different types of ministries throughout the city of San Jose. He explained that they have a skate ministry where they go around and set up a mini skate park for the kids to use and in the process share the gospel. They also have two professional skaters from Canada that work with them. They have a dental ministry where they go to poor communities and indigenous locations to work on peoples teeth, specifically children. They have a human trafficking ministry where they go out at 1 in the morning to the streets of San Jose and form relationships and dialogue with the prostitutes, transvestites, and the children that are so lost and broken. He even told us a testimony regarding one of the people that changed their life through this ministry. They do a thing where they bring bibles to people. Their mission is to have a bible in every home so they go around delivering bibles to the community. Another ministry they do is build houses for those in need. He mentioned today that they have people come specifically for this from different parts of the world and they built a house for a family in just 2 days. They do a ministry with the homeless and bless them by bringing them food, coffee, and companionship. They believe in building relationships with them so that they can build trust and hope in their lives. They also have a couple other ministries that focus on kids and bringing the families of the community together in order to show them the love of Christ that is inside of each and every person.
As you can see this organization has many different ministries within its own that they participate in. In order for this organization to continue to further God’s kingdom in this way, they need more teams and more volunteers that want to give their time and life to Christ. This is a great place where people can come, volunteer, live in community with other believers, worship together on a weekly bases, do bible studies, and learn what your calling is and what God’s purpose is for you in this life that he has so graciously given us.
