One of our favorite things about having World Racers all over the globe is getting to see the incredible pictures they take during their 11 months. We have so many great photographers on the field, and one of the best is Jonathan Garner of the January 2013 O Squad. Jonathan just finished his Race, and he shared some tips for future World Race photographers to take the best pictures they can.

1. Try to carry your camera with you at all times but don’t be afraid to set it down and take in some sights and memories that only your eyes can truly capture.

2. Many cultures believe that getting their picture taken isn’t a good thing. Be sensitive when pulling your camera out to snap a quick shot. This is a great conversation to have with your ministry contact before going out on the field. (Check out #6 as well).

3. When you take a picture of someone, go ahead and show them the picture. Not only is this respectful, but you would be surprised at how many people around the world have never seen a picture of themselves.

4. Shoot what you like to shoot and how you like to shoot. Don’t worry about what people at home or on the Race expect to see.

5. Invest in a “nicer” camera but be prepared to possibly ding it up a bit. I purchased a Canon T3i before I left home and am so glad that I decided to spend the extra cash to upgrade. I would recommend going to Canon.com and checking out their refurbished camera section.

6. Build relationships! Some of my favorite pictures on the Race are the pictures I took after spending time loving on the people that I met.

7. Don’t be afraid to try new things and fail. There is no shame in laughing at a picture when it just doesn’t turn out the way you wanted it to. #strugglebus

8. If your gift is photography or videography, let your ministry contact know and offer your skills to help. Over the past 11 months, I have been to some pretty cool ministries that overlook the power of what media can do to help them.

9. I purchased an editing software called Lightroom before I left and am so glad I did. Not only is it pretty cheap, but it makes it really easy to edit in masses.

10. Learn how to say “smile” in every country you are in. A lot of people around the world simply don’t see it necessary to smile.

11. If you ever want to be in team pictures or shoot a time lapse, get a tripod. You can find some really cheap ones that are small and perfect for the Race.

Honorable Mention:

Teach your teammates how to use your camera. Not only is this a cool way to share your interest, but they can also practice taking pictures of you…and your mom will be happy you are finally in pictures!

We have loved following Jonathan’s journey and enjoying his amazing photos, and we can’t wait to see what new photographers begin their journeys in January on the YZABC Squads.
