Kristin Phillips and Katie Wright of N Squad have joined in the story of how the Lord is working as they encounter spiritual warfare in very real ways in Mozambique.
We hadn’t been in Mozambique a week when we encountered our first demons.
On our first Sunday, Pastor Eduardo, our local contact, told us that a woman had requested prayer for spiritual issues. Before we prayed he informed us that there might be a manifestation.
As we walked toward an odd straw house, my teammate Katie said she felt something her spirit didn’t like.
The woman explained that while she was sleeping she was often awakened to something binding her legs. She asked us to pray, so we stood in a circle and began to sing worship songs.
Suddenly, the woman took a sharp breath and started laughing. We prayed harder. Then she started dancing. We prayed harder. She started beating her chest. We prayed harder. She started yelling at us all.
We prayed harder.
Every time we prayed, she manifested a different symptom. After nearly two hours of spiritual activity, the demons seemed to calm down.
Pastor Eduardo explained to us that the woman’s mother was a witch doctor who became sick. When witchcraft couldn’t heal her mother, she began going to church. After her mother’s death, this woman decided to burn down her mother’s home due to the demonic issues involved in being a witch doctor.
She continued to go to church but began to have demonic issues herself. She is normally fine for a few weeks then the demons begin to show themselves again and she manifests. She understands God’s power over them, and she asks for our prayers to cast them out.
Spiritual warfare is not isolated to this woman’s soul. It’s very real in this area of Mozambique.
During one Racer’s sermon she said, “Mozambique has taught me that spiritual warfare is real,” and all the power in the church went out. Undeterred, the whole congregation pulled out their flashlights and continued to worship.
Our encounter with this woman has taught us spiritual warfare is real. But more importantly, we know that God is more powerful than anything the enemy can do.
