For this month we are in Byron Bay Australia. It’s a backpackers town and is like stepping into the 70’s. There are a total of 5 WR teams here and we are all working with YWAM. It’s very hot, and for the past few days, has been rainy. Just the other night, a tree branch fell on my tent and woke up everyone around me.
We were given a few days off, so we have been spending time on the beach and in the cafes using the internet. Currently, we’re staying a pretty good distance away from town. It’s about a 40 minute walk. On our first walk into town, a woman met us on the sidewalk offering us cans of lemonade and coke. It was as if she knew we were thirsty. She wouldn’t accept any of the money we offered. She just wanted to provide us with a refreshing drink on a hot day.
I took my mandolin into town yesterday and joined a few musicians on the sidewalks. I told them they could keep any money that we made. It was nice to help make some money for the musicians and not expect anything in return. That opened the door for me to share with them why I was here. And they seemed happy when I asked if I could join them.
Shortly after my time on the sidewalks, I headed to the beach. There were people in a drum line playing for anyone who would listen. There was quite the crowd gathered, so I thought I’d have a look. As I was leaving, a man asked me what kind of instrument I was carrying. I told him the mandolin, then he insisted I join the drum line. So I did.
It was incredible! People were dancing, singing, and playing other instruments. I’m unsure what kind of music they were playing, or who they were playing to, however, the whole time I was playing hymns and other worship songs. When the drummers began to leave one by one, I started to put the mandolin away. A young lady asked if I would play a bit longer. Occasionally, she joined in with some kind of flute instrument. The Racers who were with me stayed a while longer too, and we all had worship by the beach. A few people who were passing by joined us in worship. The whole evening was unbelievable. God was there.
I’m beginning to see that God has His hand on every single thing we’re doing. Whether we’re walking during the heat of the day, or playing music by the beach. He’s here with us. And He’s taking care of us.
