7:00 p.m. – 6 girls get together for “band practice.” 5 of those girls had never been in a band.
4 of those girls had never really played an instrument.
8:00 pm.- The band gets ready for the performance.
9:00 p.m.- The band march down Walking Street with drums and guitars on a mission.
10:00 p.m.- The band sits waiting in Utopia Bar listening to the house band rocking Metallica songs
and gets a little nervous about this bizarre idea.
10:30 p.m.- The band starts to question if their 10 p.m. audition is really going to happen.
10:45 p.m.- God uses 6 ordinary girls to rock the red light district in Thailand.
True story.
2 weeks ago God placed a song about the city in Amy’s heart. She wrote the lyrics and melody in one hour. 1 week ago, she told us she felt like it should be played in a bar on Walking Street.
5 days ago, we walked into every bar with a stage on Walking Street to ask for an audition.
2 days ago Team Hephzibah and Tiffany, our squad leader, walked through one of the worst red light districts in the world carrying bongos and guitars looking like a hippy band.
Whether it was our outfits, our instruments, or the determined look on our faces…I’m not sure-
but people were stopping in their tracks to watch us as we went.
We walked into Utopia Bar and sat waiting. I waved at the lead guitarist who had granted the audition.
We sat and listened to them absolutely rock out.
I won’t lie, my heart was anxious.
There was maybe 20 people in the bar, but still I’ve only played the drums 4 times my entire life.
10:00 came and went and 30 minutes later we were still wondering if we would really play. At 10:45, I’m losing a little faith, and then he points at me and asks, “You ready?” I look around to see who he is asking and realize he was talking to me.“Yes!” I say with a lot more confidence than I had. We get up there and start getting our stuff together. I swear that drum set was pimped out. There was at least 20 more gadgets on there than any other drum set I’ve ever seen. The bass player asks if we have a bass guitarist. I say no and tell him to play with us. I also say we’ve never done this before. He looks at me incredulously.
Then we start playing. And gaining confidence.
The minute we start, light bursts in the darkness.
The name of Jesus is being proclaimed in one of those dark corners of the world.
People start coming into the bar. Every table is taken. Prostitutes and tourists are stopping in the streets to see who is playing. We play Amy’s song, Our God by Chris Tomlin, and God of this City (the song wrote by Bluetree for this city) at our 10:00 “audition” on a Friday night.
God just used 6 ordinary girls to do an extraordinary thing: proclaim that He is greater
than anything else in this dark place.
Did we make mistakes? Probably.
Did we do one of the coolest things we’ll probably ever do in our lives? Most likely.
Was our God glorified?
Absolutely.
