A few things I have learned about being a Team Leader.
Let me preface by saying that I have failed at these multiple times and am in no way close to being perfect, just ask my team. Here are just a few things I have observed in my time as a leader and I want to put into words.
- You are not your position. It doesn’t define you, yes you have more duties but it has to be released as it can be freely given and taken away.
- Just be you! Don’t pretend to be someone you are not! Like I said your position doesn’t define you so don’t sacrifice being real.
- Up your quiet time.
- Worship together. A lot.
- Learn from eachother.
- Write a mission statement for your team and constantly revamp vision.
- Lead by example. If you are not willing to go there, dont expect it from others.
- Be vulnerable. Whether it is with your past or giving people honest feedback. This opens the door for people to go there.
- Have team time/feedback everyday. If you don’t. You open the door for things to be swept under the rug.
- Do your C&C’s and get the paperwork stuff down right when it happens. If it builds up it adds stress.
- Forgive and accept forgiveness when you wrong someone.
- Repent for wrongs.
- Learn eachothers love languages.
- Create an environment of encouragement.
- Pursue each and every person on your team.
- The best way to fight for the team is through prayer.
- Stay calm in high-pressure situations.
- Empower. Empower. Empower. Try to do it all and you’ll burn out.
- Love your finance person well. They are awesome and do so much so help as much as you can.
- Schedule fun. Or just getting to know eachother. It will bring you closer.
- Figure out what it means to truly rest in Christ and go there often.
- Fall in love with Jesus over and over.
- Everything you do should point the team towards Jesus.
- Find ways to go beyond serving your ministry contact.
- Always pray over a new ministry site when you get there.
- Give people challenges!
- Be sensitive to where people are at, but don’t be afraid to step on toes.
- Do a bible study together. Or something that is helping you all grow.
- Try to only use a healthy amount of internet.
- Constantly check on fundraising.
- Lead through a greater dependence on Him.
- Serve with all your heart.
- Dont be offendable.
These are just a few things that i have gathered while leading and some of these i never thought to implement or failed rather ungracefully. I am so thankful for my teams patience and the way they call me out and teach me, sometimes when they don't even realize it.
