As we celebrate Christmas, we need to remember the reason for it. Two thousand plus years ago, a baby was born that would change everything. The baby was Jesus. The first humans ever, Adam and Eve, sinned by eating what God had told them not to eat. Sin is the wrong or evil things that we do or think (ex: lies, cheating, etc). This caused them and all other humans to never again be allowed in the Garden of Eden. The Garden of Eden was paradise where we could walk alongside God. All humans after Adam and Eve (other than Jesus) have sinned also. Jesus is the only human to have ever lived who was without sin.
Imagine that you are led into a courtroom by a guard who has you chained. You are brought before the Judge who will decide your fate. You are accused of sinning against God with the charges against you listed. You try to argue your case but know deep down that you are guilty. The only way to enter heaven is to be totally pure of all sin (having never sinned). The Judge has sufficient proof so he convicts you on all counts and sentences you to death.
As you are crying and trying to resist being taken away by the guard, Jesus walks in. Jesus, being sent from God, was tempted in every way and is the only one who has never sinned. He tells you is willing to take your punishment.
“Then Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But now He has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of Himself. Just as man is destined to die once, and after that face judgment, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people …”- Hebrews 9:26-28
“For the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” -Romans 6:23
The guard unlocks your chains and releases you. We can have freedom from that punishment. He has given you a new chance at life.
He is willing to give us a fresh start if we ask Him, stop doing those things, and follow Him by spending time praying and reading the Bible. We also need to spend time with other believers to strengthen each other by working together to become closer to Jesus.
