Today is Sunday, the fourth day that team Awaken Depth has been in Kitale,
Kenya. More has happened in these four days than I thought possible. On
Friday, we dove right into teaching, I stood in front of a class of young Kenyan
students and shared my story, how I got here and why I am here. I also had the
opportunity to learn a little Swahili and to assist in teaching a class on
geography. I wrote down the names of the students in my class and also what
they aspired to be one day. Many of them said doctor, lawyer, engineer or
teacher. Dominic wants to be an aeronautical engineer while Wilkister wants to
be a journalist. These students are incredibly capable and intelligent and I am
excited to be here with them.
Saturday was our day off, so we went into town and took care of some
essential things, then we relaxed a bit in the afternoon and evening. Then
today, we were right back at it. We joined the children for church and sang
songs. Ali, our team leader spoke to everyone about why she is here and what
God has spoken to her. Then, Christian shared his testimony. Many of the
children were encouraged. After lunch, I had the opportunity to teach a bible
study on the Genesis 1 and 2 account of creation, and why the Bible’s account is
more viable than alternate views, such as evolution for instance.
After all this, I spoke with Job, who works with the Nairobi Aviation
College. He also teaches here at Great Mercy. On Friday, I had suggested I
might teach the students an introductory class on Aviation. Judith, who runs
Great Mercy, introduced me to Job and they are eager to begin a class and
possibly put together a curriculum for students interested in careers in
Aviation. This is very exciting, and the idea that I have been here four days
and this may be a possibility blows my mind. I am able to get resources from
the FAA that will be useful in teaching and putting together a curriculum and if
we work hard, perhaps by the end of the month we will have something in place.
I have never done anything like this before, but perhaps God has things arranged
already so that this will happen.
To top off the day, after the Bible study we walked over to a nearby field to
play football with some teachers and students. Christian and I represented the
“Mzungus” and we were team captains. So, we chose our teams and played
barefoot. We had to avoid cow pies and random wood stakes that protruded from
the ground. Halfway through the game four cows walked onto the field to graze.
The game went on however, we just played around the cows. Everyone was laughing
and having a great time. I think agriculture and sports ought to be combined
more often – it makes the game more interesting.
So, this is my time so far in Kenya, I am very much anticipating what the
rest of the month holds!
