There’s a saying out there that says, “God does not give us more than we can handle.” Unless I’ve missed it I haven’t found that saying in the Bible. What I have found is “the Lord is my strength and my shield” Psalm 28:7, “I will strengthen you and help you” Isiah 41:10. I think that God purposely puts us in situations we can not handle. God is more interested in our character than our comfort, and because of that God puts us in places where we have no choice but to be 100% reliant upon him. God promises us strength for situations in which we can not handle. God reminded me of a lesson he taught me month 1 in the Philippines that has continued to resonate throughout the race: Get to the end of your ability. Get to the end of your ability to love, your ability to have patience, your ability to handle situations. Get to the end of your abilities and get there fast. And walk into my ability. My ability to love, my ability to have patience my ability to handle situations. Because my ability is endless.
Saying “God does not give us more than we can handle” places the strength on us. It says, “I am strong, I can do this.” I want to say, ‘where do we give God the opportunity to show up’ with that mindset, but the real question is, where do we get over ourselves and realize that God can do more through us when we fully surrender to his love.
“I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith.” Ephesians 3:16-17
