PAK-CHONG (2.5 Hours from
Bangkok) – Molly’s Team
Reverend Steve and Andrea McGowan,
Pak-Chong,
Thailand.
Steve and Andrea McGowan started their ministry in
Thailand fifteen years ago to the hilltribe areas in
Northern Thailand. After five years with the hilltribes with no running water, electricity or other amenities, the McGowans followed the Lord’s call to Pak-Chong, a market town northeast of
Bangkok. It takes about two-and-a-half hours by taxi to reach Pak-Chong from
Bangkok. The town has around 100,000 people, and the Christian presence there is very small. After ten years of working in the town, the McGowans are starting to see major breakthroughs in the community.
At Christmas, the McGowan’s hosted their first short term team. Both Steve and Andrea are teachers in a huge local high school that has about 2,000 students. Andrea is the head of the English department. In the past, school administrators were leery of foreign guests and did not welcome them into their school. This Christmas, the McGowan’s short term team was given full rein with the classrooms, and was able to teach English and present the gospel to many students! Due to time limitations, the team was only able to reach a few classes. They had students lining up to meet with the short term team members, and were turned away, disappointed, when time ran out and the team had to leave.
Steve and Andrea believe that a strategic short term team to their area could reach every one of the 2000 high school students with the message of Christ. In addition to working with these high school students, both in the classroom and out, the McGowan’s have planted a church that now has about 60 members. A team could be a huge boost to the church plant through outreach to the community in the form of English classes, sports outreach, children’s ministry, etc.
KANCHANABURI – Kyle’s Team
Church Planting Ministry – Kanchanaburi
Kanchanaburi, a province in western
Thailand, became world-famous after the movie “The Bridge on the River Kwai” hit screens in the 1950’s. Today…Arun and his wife, Pang, have now started a new YWAM Thailand ministry in western
Thailand in March 2003. While Kanchanaburi is still in the development stages (limited cell phone coverage) the opportunities to share Jesus Christ abound everywhere! Your team will have an opportunity to teach English at a local school, as well as engage in open air evangelism at the local market and various other venues. There is also the opportunity to do prayer walking in and around the town, visit with villagers, and even encourage the local Christians. Your team will also be asked to help out every Sunday morning by sharing testimonies, helping to lead worship, performing dances or dramas and even preaching the morning sermon! Arun and Paeng also have a plethora of goats that they own and your team will be asked to help with the daily feeding, cleaning and upkeep! RATCHABURI – Mark’s Team
Local Thai Ministry – Ratchaburi
Ratchaburi is a province in central
Thailand close to the Thai-Burmese border, yet only two hours away from
Bangkok. A plethora of ministry opportunities are available to your team in Ratchaburi. The ministry of YWAM Ratchaburi is mainly focused on the youth of Ratchaburi, building relationships with them through teaching English and running camps (English camps, sports camps, music camps etc). There are at least 10 schools in the area, giving your team many opportunities to reach the lives of the youth of
Thailand. There is also a university in Ratchaburi where you build relationships with the students through an English club. Other ministry opportunities include going to a local orphanage, serving the local churches and evangelism in the nearby villages.
Vision –
The vision is to see every generation in Ratchaburi touched by the love of Jesus. This is done through children receiving quality foundational education – the youth seeking to know Jesus – the poor being able to support their families with dignity – the elderly having a place where they can receive love and care.
