After we left mexico we headed to Antigua, Guatemala for a week. During that week we were able to work with God’s child project. God’s child was started by a man named Patrick who is from the United States. The God’s Child project is a school for children who are among the poorest of the poor. There are many schools in Central and South America and the school in Antigua has 150 children. These children in Antigua are the poorest of the poor. This project is not founded on Jesus Christ and is based on the belief that all roads lead to Heaven. They believe in God but do not believe that Jesus Christ is the way to salvation. We went to the school in our small teams as only 7-10 volunteers were wanted in the classrooms each day. Nessa went on Wednesday and I felt the Lord telling me to go back the following two days. We were paired up with other world racers and allowed to go into the classrooms and observe/help the teacher.
I was able to be with the second grade class for the three days that we were there. These second graders where anywhere from 8 to 13 years old and there were only 6 girls and 15 boys. I was able to just sit an spend time with them as they were in the classroom, in the library, and at recess. We played soccer together, made valentines, learned numbers, listened to a story, and learned about plants and animals ( although I don’t know what all of the animals are in spanish. I should have had my dictionary.) The first day I was there, Professor Leonel asked if I would teach the children a song or some play or drama. Sure why not. I taught a song that was a little crazy and fun. The kids seemed to have a good time even though the song was in english, they had me sing it with them the following two days as well.
Going into the time in Guatemala I really didn’t want to get involved in a ministry that would last half the week, but after my first day there I could not not go back. And maybe its because I’ve been in that environment before with subbing at a school back home and I am a little more comfortable in a classroom than I am in front of adults teaching. It was great just getting to love on these children and just be with them. I didn’t have to do anything but just hold them or play and just be there. But the Lord really showed me who He is through this experience.
