I have said it before and I have no doubt of the following fact:

I am my father’s daughter.

Many of my personality traits have come straight from him. And over the course of my life, this has honestly been a blessing and the cause of some major struggles.  My father’s and my relationship, for example, is not always easy because he and I are so much alike; we tend to argue…against each other, but usually for the same side.  However, on days like today, I realize things I wouldn’t normally take the time to notice.  Like how my relationship with my father would make a great “I have never…” game.

You see, there are certain things I can say “I have never…” about when it comes to my father:

I have never doubted if he would be there…tae kwon do tournaments or promotions, band recitals, football games (to watch the marching band), graduations, moving days, I never worried he wouldn’t show up.

I have never doubted he would help me if I asked…with anything, including fixing the mistakes he knew I was making.

I have never doubted that if I called him, anytime or anywhere, and said I really needed him, he would be there as soon as he could be (and in some cases, sooner than he should be able to be).

I have never questioned if he would forgive me for doing x, y, or z… even if I knew when I was doing them he would disapprove.

I have never forgotten that though I may not be a little girl anymore, I will always be his little girl.

I have never doubted how proud he is of me.

I have never wondered if my father loved me.

And the sad truth is: I know many people who cannot make the same statements, or even some of them. I find this particularly sad because I have heard many times over that your relationship with your Heavenly Father, at the very least, has a basis in your relationship with your earthly father… That since your earthly father teaches you through his actions your initial definition of the word “father”, you then translate that to your Heavenly Father.  If that is the case, then I hit the jackpot!  Because my father taught me all the above things are also true about my Heavenly Father and I have never questioned it.

So to all the fathers out there, I challenge you to be the dad whose kids would write a better blog than this about you.

Until next time!!

P.S. To my own Dad, it’s not every year that you become a steak sauce!! Happy Birthday!!
