[written on 1/8/11]
current location: right now I am in the back of donkey on our 7th day of our drive down to Cape Town. we just left Tom Burke, South Africa.
current mood: at peace :]
current song I’m listening to: Eli Young Band (reminds me of you Kara!)
current fear: not really anything after bungee jumping off the second highest bridge in the world just a couple of days ago!!
one thing God reminded me of today: His blessings are beyond amazing. He blessed us with the most amazing breakfast this morning and I just love when He loves on us for no reason.
today we got to sleep in! I woke up at 6:30AM… haha. and yesterday we saw an elephant CROSS the ROAD!!!!!! you heard me.
So to update you guys on our 7th month of ministry: team DR has been making our way down to Cape Town, South Africa. to start off the new year, January was our ATL (ask the Lord) month for P squad. When team DR started praying about this month we all knew we wanted ministry that looked different. None of us (except for Daniel) had been in a city yet for ministry so we began to pray into that. The Lord laid on our hearts love: plain and simple… to just be able to love on lots of people. and boy has He let us so far. here is the story behind this adventure of ours:
Once we told Johan and Marie, our contacts from last month, that we felt God leading us to Cape Town- God just kept orchestrating every thing from there. They are from Cape Town and needed a way to get their truck (aka donkey) back down there. since we needed a way of transportation there, they generously offered to let us drive it down. we all loved the idea of a road trip. I had even just shared with my team how one day I would love to travel the US and go from bowling alley to bowling alley documenting with photography the awesome people I would meet along the way… which lead to a conversation on how God places so many daily opportunities in our lives to spread His light.
so on January 2nd, the six of us and all our bags packed into donkey and off to Cape Town we went! it will take us 8 days to road trip across Africa. man who in their lifetime can say they have done that!! We have been waking up about 4:30AM everyday to get on the road by 5 to be driving the second the sun rises. we have been sleeping any and everywhere, sometimes even 2 to a twin bed. and we have been eating tuna tuna and more tuna from a can. we went through Zambia and Botswana and now we are in South Africa. We have 3 days left. it has been awesome meeting and ministering to the people along the way. also getting some touristy stuff in and getting to feel somewhat normal again even if just for a little bit.
[written upon arriving]
this trip was all about FAITH. we had to have faith in the Lord for a place to sleep every night (sometimes that was inside donkey, ha). we had to have faith in the Lord for enough money for food. we had to have faith in the Lord that donkey wouldn’t break down, and when she did (which she did) that everything would work out. God not only provided us with a safe drive, but he blessed us beyond what we had imagined was in store for us. We met so many of Marie and Johan’s wonderful family and friends- who all took us in and fed us and gave us beds and spoiled us as if we were their own.
Once we got to Cape Town we needed a place to stay AND a place for ministry. we had no idea what this was going to look like. and well again the Lord provided! Marie’s parents, Dirk and Elise, just so happened to be going up to Malawi where we had been to visit their grandkids and they needed someone to watch their two adorable doggies! so they have graciously been letting us stay in their house for the past two weeks. and their good friends Duffy and Jostine have been taking such good care of us and feeding us like no other!! they have been a blessing. We have also got to spend time with our dear friend Gaby, who was with us all last month in Senga Bay.
For ministry, we have been working with a homeless shelter called MES (Metro Evangelical Services). We didn’t know about it until arriving here. Joseph the main guy who has been mentoring us, is so much a man of God. He took us to where the pimps and prostitutes live last week and we got to minister to a couple of prostitutes while they were working. it was surreal to me. I honestly didn’t know what to think. and I still don’t even know how to put it all into words. so many great things are happening here. I will share more later. love you all!!
enjoy the trailer from our road trip Daniel made below- it has us bungee jumping in Zambia off of Victoria Falls, the second highest place in the world :]
