The LORD told Moses to call him “I AM.” I’ve heard that this is because there is no word that could describe him. I think the reason for this is because human vocabularies are restrained by our capacity to conceptualize. After trying to understand eternity alone, I believe that if a human word could adequately reveal an ounce of his being, my mind would short-circuit.

But he wants to be known. He caused not a human word, but his Word to become flesh so that we could know him.

When Jesus spoke to his disciples about the mysteries of the Kingdom, he couldn’t describe them plainly. He had to tell stories to reveal aspects of a realm no one had yet experienced.

“I will open My mouth in parables;
I will utter things kept secret from the foundation of the world.”

I wonder if the Psalmist prophesied not only of Jesus using parables to explain the Kingdom to his disciples, but also how God uses parables with our lives.

He created us in his image. In his people, he is scattered through all of time and throughout the earth.

When we obey his voice, we unfold mysteries hidden since before creation. Our lives explain what couldn’t be understood in human words.
