We had a fun day yesterday! It was our "off day" (even though ministry doesn't start until Monday because of the Independence Day weekend.) My team bought groceries to cook for our squad and for our team's lunches for the next couple of days. Sally, our host, told us about the Mayan ruins that are only about three miles away, so we decided to take a visit for a couple hours.
The ruins were neat. At the park, you were able to climb on the ancient walls and go where ever. We walked along the trail with a great view of the mountains.
The best part, though, was the walk back where we experienced some sort of tradition for Independence Day. Groups of Guatemalans stood on the side of the road while other groups ran by with makeshift torches. The runners would get pelted with water balloons made with plastic bags and buckets of water. Our group remained dry for a little while, until Lincoln and Kath decided to blow their whistles and run with the group of Guatemalan runners. Then we were fair game. It was fun 🙂
Today we went to the Independence day parade. I have lots of photos of that which I will probably post later.
