I can remember the phone call like it was yesterday. I was driving home from college to spend some time with my family. As I pulled in the driveway, I hung up the phone. I had just gotten off the line with a person from Adventures in Missions. He told me that I had been accepted to go on the World Race. Immediately, I was filled with pure excitement! 11 countries in 11 months?! I couldn’t believe it. Soon after being accepted, my curiosity struck me, “Who will I be going on the World Race with?” Well my friends, my curiosity has been answered.
Over the past couple of weeks, I have been group texting and Skyping with this cast of characters. The conversations include some of your normal topics; What is your favorite kind of candy bar? Where are you from? and What kind of music do you like? While all the answers vary, one item of business is consistent, we are all excited to go on the World Race! Our group chats get so extensive that it has not become unusual for me to open my WhatsApp to see 500 unread messages. We have a lot of chatty Kathy’s 🙂
The different walks of life came as no surprise to me. There was one item that did catch me off guard. I did a quick count of the number of guys vs. girls on our squad. I counted a second time then a third. At this point in time, there are only 6 guys and 30 girls in my squad! This 5:1 ratio had me scratching my head. I grew up having only one sister. I guess for 11 months, I’ll have 30! I write this brief blog post to tell you this:
It amazes me, that in such a short period of time, one group of people can become so incredibly close. We have become so close because we are all pursuing the same task! Each and everyone of us has felt called to go on this 11 month journey. United by faith, love, and a heart to serve, I believe we can do amazing things. God is going to impact our lives more than we can all imagine 🙂
It has only been a few weeks of knowing these goons, but what a momentous occasion it will be when we all meet at training camp come October 15th!
With much love,
Spencer
