We have door to door evangelism the first half the day on Tuesday-Friday.
In the afternoons we visit a local hospital and pray for the patients.
On Saturdays we play with close to 200 young children that attend the school next door to the church
On Sunday we attend church and usually preach and sing a few worship songs.
This month is busy, for sure, but it is so enjoyable for me.
I have never felt super confident or comfortable sharing the gospel, but I am thankful for learning the discipline and joy of it this month. It has only been a few days since we arrived in Kenya and began ministry but already we have had the opportunity to share the gospel so many times, and over 20 people have committed to follow Christ. We have been overjoyed to see the fruit this month!
During the week, after eating breakfast we set out and walk a mile to church. We arrive and our group of “Wazungu” pair up with our Kenyan translators and we set out walking again, to the nearby villages. The people here are so friendly and hospitable and are more than happy to have us come inside and sit down to share with them. With those who don’t know Jesus, we share the gospel, and with those who already follow Christ we find out how we can encourage and pray for them. This is one of the most rewarding things I have done on the race. I absolutely love being able to encourage them, pray for them, and tell them about Jesus and what He has done in my life.
Today, while going door to door, I was reminded of a truth….
As we were out sharing today, me, Dan and Mary (the 2 translators that were with me) found a block of about 4 houses.
There was one door open, so we stood outside the door and said “hodi” and waited to be invited in by the traditional “Karibu”. Once we heard the welcome we went inside to find a husband and wife and their small son. Dan explains why we are visiting them and then he turns it over to me.
I then proceed to systematically lay out the gospel, also giving him examples from my life. I am not naturally good at being concise and clear when I give explanations, but I was surprised at how well It flowed today. He listened and shook his head at all the right parts. As I concluded, I asked him what he thought about what I had said and I honestly expected to hear him say he wanted to accept Christ. So needless to say I was quite shocked when he responded with…
What?… I thought I had been so clear and effective and yet he was completely unmoved. All I could do was to pray that the Lord would reveal Himself to this man.
After leaving that house, we saw this couple’s next door neighbor sitting outside on the stoop. The young man invited us in and as we conversed with him we came to learn that he went to the Catholic church but had not accepted Christ because he liked to drink alcohol.
So once again, I began to share the gospel and how Christ had worked in my own life. This time as I finished and asked the man what he thought about what I had shared he said he wanted to accept Christ. We prayed with him and now he is born again!
2 Neighbors… I share with one and he is totally unaffected and then I share with the other and his life is changed forever.
So what I was reminded of today is that my only job is to share the gospel. It is not up to me if they receive it or not… if they commit to follow Jesus or not…that part has nothing to do with me. God works in His own way and in His own timing. He receives all the Glory for any soul that comes to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. I am only the messenger and ambassador. The rest is up to Him.
