Hello all my supporters. Thank you so much for the numerous comments I received on my three-sentenced blog. It really is encouraging to read your comments, so please keep posting them. Here’s an update of my first week in the Dominican Republic.
After an entire day of travel by plane and bus we finally arrived in San Juan, DR. We are living in a house and an apartment on the corner of the 19th of April, yep that is our street name. It is definitely hot here but humidity is tolerable at least for me since I’m use to it. Our accommodations are basic but we have toilets and bucket showers (filling a bucket with water and using that to bath) and a roof and four walls.
San Juan is an interesting city. There are so many different smells both good and bad. The people here are always sitting outside usually with a group just chilling and talking. We have met some really nice people at some of the restaurants we have eaten at and at the internet café we found. Life moves at a slower pace here, time is not that important. Restaurants’ food changes so you never know what will be there to eat when you get there. We eat out for both lunch and dinner because it is cheap, less than $2 a person. The food has been really good. My favorite is this taco place that has amazing tacos, different than Mexican tacos.
After Saturday the 10th our squad will be heading out to our assigned ministries. My team will be staying here in San Juan and ministering in the neighborhood we are living in. four other teams will be staying in San Juan and living with us, but ministering in different areas. One other teams are heading out to the mountains and the final two are going to a village south of San Juan.
We will be focusing on the children and their families in a four-block radius of our house. We will be running vbs type activities with the kids some days, spending time with elderly in a nursing home, praying for the ill neighbors we have, and praying for the neighborhood area. The main focus is building relationships with those around us and sharing the love of Jesus with them.
I will try to post weekly while I am here in the DR. I am hoping to have stories to share with you of our ministry and time here.
