I am a Living Character in an Epic Story
Life is a story that God is writing.
Each day is the turning of a page. The characters are living and thinking. The
decisions they make are very real. The actions they take change the story.
Think of the Chronicles of Narnia.
Four children stumble upon an incredible world. Quickly, they are caught up in
a story, in a battle, in a struggle of good vs. evil. It wasn’t something they
anticipated. The choices they would have to make would not be easy, but in the
end, they would join the forces of Aslan and triumph over the armies of darkness.
God is writing a story, a tremendous story. It has been underway since the dawn of history. It has encompassed every
civilization, billions of people (many of whom are living at this time),
and a spiritual realm which I cannot see
or hear. It is very real. The consequences of the decisions we make in this
life are very real. The battle is very real. And how we live each day will show
how seriously we take the author of this Epic.
That is where I find myself today,
sitting on my air mattress in this beautiful home in El Salvador. Today, the sun has
risen, another page has turned. Though I have a small part in this story, one
person in billions, I have a part to play. I have a role in the story of life.
The decisions I make and the actions I take are being recorded as I live this
day out.
I am not alone. The author is with
me, encouraging, teaching, growing; and He has also provided me with companions. Each one of
them has a different role in this story and somehow the author has caused our paths to cross.
Today is a new day. What do I want this chapter to say?
As this day is forever recorded in God’s Epic, what do I want to be remembered?
I want to be that
character who lived well. I want to be that character who took a stand for what
is right, who was aware of the setting around him, who saw the needs before
him, who knew the battle, and fought for what he knew to be right – a character
of courage, strength, love, nobility, and truth.
I could write my own story. In that
story, the protagonist would probably be a character like me. Not perfect, not
the ideal hero, but a simple character who would came to play an extra-ordinary
role. But the story that I would write could never be as great as the story that
is being written out every day. And what good would it be to create such a
noble character in a world of fiction if I could not outlive that
character in reality? For every author out there, don’t let your protagonist outlive you. J

What do I
want this chapter to say?
