Ever heard the expression "Can't see the forest for the trees?" It's a pretty famous and incredibly relevant saying. Especially these days, and especially for me. I'm what you might refer to as a details guy. I get caught on every single one of them. Normally this isn't much of an issue; actually it kinda helps me when I plan events and whatnot. In the groups I'm a part of on campus I'm usually the logistics guy, I make sure everything works and make sure it happens the way it should. Being a details guy and a logistics guy tends to go hand-in-hand, but sometimes it can be stressful and ridiculous.
Take now, for instance. A group of campus ministry's student leadership has gotten together and formed a "council" of sorts. Our thinking behind this is that as Christians we all have one goal, to be reach our campus for Christ. We meet and pray for one another, help each other, and sometimes collaborate for events. Right now we're collaborating for a giant night of worship called Unite. We want the people of Southern Miss to know that the Christians here will stand together as the Body of Christ on our campus. Obviously there are differences in thinking, different denominations, theology, demographics, but we can all agree that Jesus Christ died for our sins. So we've decided to work together! Crazy cool idea, right? Indeed it is! But there are issues with every plan and right now it's the details.
Who knew you'd have to pay so much money to reserve 2 rooms on our campus? Who knew my school slaps random charges on student groups trying to have events? Who knew the reservation process would take 3 weeks!? I obviously did not. It's times like these that I get lost in the planning. I forget why we're doing this and get stressed out over minute details and get frustrated, stressed, and nervous. It's a pretty stupid place to be in. It's not just this event either. Graduating, uncertainty of life in general… Heck, even the Race. Sometimes especially the Race. Getting all this money, getting all this gear, getting all these shots to prevent horrendous diseases (seriously, there are some twisted sounding ailments in the world today). There are tons of little details all over the place that are keeping me from seeing the huge, awe-inspiring forest for the many thousand trees.
But you know what? It's gonna be ok. I asked the guys of V Squad for some prayer for Unite and the uplifting responses they gave me seemed to come from God and all together they seemed to say "It's gonna be ok." Kaleigh Ward, a girl in V Squad who is ridiculously amazing at fundraising (I think she's a bank robber by night), posted a hilarious blog recently. Kaleigh won a campus-wide game of tag at her university with a cash prize big enough to pay for some of her gear for the Race. God used a flipping game of tag to help Kaleigh with the Race. After I read that I heard again God saying something to the effect of "It's gonna be ok." Then I shared my sentiments with the rest of the team planning Unite and we all affirmed each other that not only is everything gonna work out the exact way it should, but that it's going to be amazing.
What is some money to the God of the universe? What’s a few measly details to the creator of us all? God laid this vision for my campus on my heart 2 years ago and I think that He wants this to happen. Which means that it's gonna be ok. More than that, it's gonna be incredible. Same thing for graduating, same thing for life as a whole, and same thing for the World Race. It's all going to be ok.
My last blog I posted about my doubts about everything. This blog, I think I've gotten over that a little bit. Funny how God works over time, eh? Please do pray for us down here at Southern Miss. We (and many, many other Christians on our campus) are taking a stand to make Christ a fixture here. It isn't easy, and it isn't always fun… But it's worth it. I hope everyone had just the most amazing Easter this weekend and has a fantastic week this week. I didn't even mention it, but do you know Jesus rose again? Pretty neat thing, I'd say.
Happy Easter!
