I will be the first person to tell you that Christmas music is not my favorite! In fact, part of me dreads the Christmas season because with it comes Jingle Bells, Frosty the Snowman, All I Want For Christmas and so many more. I am not that crazy person that listens to Christmas music all year round, and if you are that person, I am so sorry!!
There is one Christmas song though, that I could listen to over and over again all 365 days of the year. The song is called This is War and it is sung by Dustin Kensrue. If you haven't heard this song, I strongly recommend it! Dustin uses this song to bring forth a perspective that is quite unique.
His perspective is not that Christmas is some holly jolly time filled with hot coco and talking snowmen, but his perspective shows us that we are in a constant state of war with the enemy and Christmas, the birth of our Savior, is THE greatest act of war that God has ever waged on sin and death. Look at his lyrics!
This is war like you ain't seen.
This winter's long, it's cold and mean.
With hangdog hearts we stood condemned,
But the tide turns now at Bethlehem.
This is war and born tonight,
The Word as flesh, the Lord of Light,
The Son of God, the low-born king;
Who demons fear, of whom angels sing.
This is war on sin and death;
The dark will take it's final breath.
It shakes the earth, confounds all plans;
The mystery of God as man.
Now, we certainly have the advantage in this war. We know how it ends! Jesus tells us in John 16 that we will face hard times, but we don't have to fear because He has already overcome the world, and all of it's best battle plans. And Revelations 20 tells us exactly what will happen to Satan and all of his followers; they will pay. And then Revelations 22 explains that we will spend all of eternity praising God, and there will be no more darkness. We win!
But that does not mean that we get to simply sit and wait for the end to come, the part where we win and things are all good. We have to fight now. Jesus tells us in Matthew 28 to go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.
We have such a big job to do, and we already know that we are going to win this war between good and evil. So what is stopping us from taking this war seriously, and really fighting for what we believe?
So I challenge you, as you are celebrating Christmas with your family and friends, don't forget what this holiday really celebrates. Our Savior came to this Earth to conquer sin and death…this is one huge act of war!
