Almost everyone that is on, or has been on, the World Race knows that weird foods are eaten while traveling (if future Racers are reading this, know that it is coming!!). I have eaten very little strange foods while I’ve been gone, although my squad makes have eaten crickets, beetles, snake, spiders, cow intestine, and I think the odd hairy pork was in there somewhere. I definitely was not adventurous enough to try any of those foods.

I did learn to like a lot of other foods though, and there are many cultural dishes I have tried that where very good. The most recent was something called “Nshema” or “pap”, which is a grain-based food similar to cream-of-wheat, or malt-o-meal, or finely ground grits (my southern friends let me know that one).

There are actually foods I will eat now, that United States culture would consider “normal”, that I actually did not touch when I left for the Race. First, tomatoes. I put them into omelette, over salad, or just slice ten and eat them straight. Second, avocados. Before the Race, they were just a slimy fruit with almost no flavor. Out of necessity when there were very little fresh fruits and I wanted more variety, I started putting them in salads, and eventually I just started eating them by themselves. Blueberries just by themselves is another one. I don’t know why I never liked them, I just didn’t, and again because of necessity, I started eating them.

The one that people may find weird that I have started to eat are “expired” foods. People, I just spend all of Month 10 eating “expired” foods, that were perfectly good, while spending almost no money because a grocery store donated all that food to the ministry. The food was great and cheat, and it also meant we “had” to eat the fresh produce because it was going to rot soon.

So that’s the short list, but there are probably other things I would eat now, I just can’t think of them. Thanks for reading!
