This month has been full of God moments! First of all, we were on an enclosed foster care village, with about 50 staff members and 160 kids, and worked with various ministries where we were around kids a lot! We got to watch them worship and dance with all their hearts, and loving (well, most of the time) each other as God would love them.
I also spent time learning more about my role in life as a disciple of God and a leader through Christ. This is a part of my life I will never stop seeking to learn more, and looking for chances to practice what I learn.
The team was split up in different areas of volunteering. My group worked on updating and filling out profiles for each of the kids. We were taking all the school information, social work information, and spiritual information for each kid and combining it into one profile for each child. It was a lot of work, and we were not actually able to finish the entire job by the time we left.
We also got the chance to do a bunch of odd jobs around the village. There is always kids around, so we were constantly playing with kids when we went in our barracks or working at the school. I was able to help balance and run sound for church services and youth gatherings throughout the month. It helped me rediscover why I like being a sound technician so much! The team helped with Sunday school activities every week, and we all found extra odd things we could do to support the full time staff as much as possible.
One aspect of the Zulu culture we noticed while we were playing with the kids is that the confidence of the girls is extremely low. The boys have a little bit of trouble with it, but the girls’ is very high. We were never able to get a clear answer on why this was the case. We figured that because of the male dominant culture, the women never really have any role except for having kids and taking care of the home. The girls on the village have not really gotten an example of what a woman can do other than that, and when they try something new, they don’t know if they will succeed.
This month has been incredible, and as my team travels to Swaziland, I could not be more thankful for the chance to work with children and adults that focus on God in every aspect of their lives.
