Today, as is usual on the World Race, I was in a conversation with people from another culture. However, this conversation was unique. I was sitting with a Macedonian and a Brazilian at a table in the church at which I am staying. We were discussing the gifts of the Spirit, and what each of us believed on the subject.
I need to explain this incredible conversation a little farther. The Brazilian has been living in the United States for 10 years, working at an International House of Prayer facility in New Jersey. She works with Christians from many different backgrounds and countries (Spain, Brasil, Korea, Portugal, and others). She is about 60 years old. The Macedonian Pastor has worked as a church planter in multiple cities in the country, working with many different groups of people from around the world. He is about 40 years old. I am a Caucasian female born and raised in America to love and work with cultures all around the world. I’ve lived in two countries and visited multiple other countries, as well as traveling for the last 8 months through various cultures. I’m 24 years old.
So many different experiences played into our conversation, and the diversity of our backgrounds allowed us to take the time to truly understand each other on levels that many people don’t even know exist. This is why cultures are awesome.
If you have never truly lived in another culture from more than a week, you need to give it a try! You will learn so much about communication, understanding others, and truly listening to gain wisdom.
