Some people, like me, think about what to pack for these kinds of trips more than others. I have decided to post packing lists for continental areas on the World Race, and also a comprehensive list at the end of the Race. These are items I actually packed and used, and what I bought there. I know that this will be helpful for some, and more complicated for others, so take it as you will.
*Note: this list is female specific, and I packed on the extreme light side of the spectrum. Almost all of my squad sisters brought more. It is completely true that if you use or wear something at home, you will use it or want it on the Race.
Eastern Asian packing list (Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia):
Clothes:
I actually didn’t bring any clothes I didn’t use. I also packed light, because Thailand was my first country and I knew I could get cheap clothes there.
Clothes I Packed:
Two tank tops (bought two more)
Two pairs underwear (bought one more)
Two bras
One skirt (bought one more)
Compression shorts (for under the skirt. I’m not very ladylike at times…)
One pair socks (replaced in month three, and also had two pairs given to me at the end of month four)
One pair converse shoes (replaced in Month Three)
Two pairs flip flops
Two t-shirts (bought two more)
One long sleeve t-shirt
One hoodie (this doubled as my pillow for multiple months)
One rain jacket
One pair sweatpants (replaced with jeans at the end of month three)
One pair shorts
Clothes I bought:
Flannel long sleeve button down
One pair Thai pants (ended up getting holes and I threw them out)
Belt (because I have lost pants sizes around my middle)
One pair tennis shoes (for exercise and travel days)
Scarf
Hygiene:
Packed:
Feminine products (use discretion with this. I suggest having a couple-month supply in case you can’t buy any, but most locations have somewhere you can get them. Many of my squad sisters brought a month supply for emergencies and a Diva cup.)
Quick dry towel
5 travel Razors (one for about every two months)
Hairbrush
Toothpaste/toothbrush
Nailclippers
Bought:
Bar Soap (was also gifted a homemade bar in Indonesia)
Deodorant
Shampoo (actually I ended up just taking the extra free packets in hotels, and that covered me)
Ponytail holders
Baby wipes (wipe showers are necessary at times)
Medicine Packed:
Essential oils (my family is big on them)
Malaria medication (3months worth)
Cipro
Ibuprofen
Accessories:
Packed:
Wristwatch
iPod+charger (used this all the time for music and pretty much everything internet related)
Ziplock bags
Journal (had to buy a second because I filled the first up)
Bible (bring the one you would use at home)
Extra pens
2 flash drives for pictures
2 pairs headphones
Airplane headphone converter
Headphone splitter
Bought:
bags for dirty clothes (to keep the smell out of my big pack)
Camping stuff (all of this was packed):
Tent (2-person)
Sleeping bag (30-degree certified)
Sleeping pad (from general comments of my squad a pad with no bevels or vertical bevels is best. I had vertical bevels. Make sure this packs small! Many people with the pads that simply rolled up had trouble packing them into airporters for traveling)
Duffle (used as an airporter. My pack was too small for my duffle, and I ended up trading with someone who needed a bigger one)
Bug spray
Sunscreen
Mini ducktape
Small bit of rope
Headlamp+AAA batteries
Multi tool
Travel eating utensils (you will want these!)
Things I didn’t need, I just wanted them:
Baseball hat (travel and sunny days)
UNO cards
3/4 guitar (hassle to travel with, but worth it for the spontaneous times of worship)
Face mask (for dusty jobs)
Hope this is helpful!!
