Today (Thursday), we were moved into high gear in the morning because Robert got a call for us to teach English at a nursing school. He got the call at 08:00, and four of us were at the school by 08:45. It was such short notice that some people weren’t even out of bed yet!

Anyway, we were teaching students working for nursing degrees in birthing. Robert said that once the students graduate they can go to other countries to practice, but most stay in the country for a while, and some go back to their own villages to help with the health care.

Because they were nursing students, we worked on body parts, not just the generic body parts we learn in early grade school, but specific ones like spine, heart, lungs, rib cage, and wrist.

We took a small break and then had individual people draw the individual body parts into a full human body. We also taught the spelling, so they could practice the words on their own.

We went back to the house for a bit, then went to a different farm that is rented for three refugee families. Their stories will be told in a later post with the rest of the Indonesian refugee stories.

While we were at the farm, Robert pointed out that there was lava flowing down the side of the mountain. I could see the smoke coming off of the side of the hill, although we were too far away to actually see the molten rock moving.

After praying for two of the farmers, We then stopped by a restaurant for lunch, and then a cafe for some wifi time before going back to the house. We had a small break, then headed out to a refugee location of 120 families to play with the kids.

We spent a couple hours there, went out for tea and roti (fried stuffed bread), and went home for dinner.

After dinner we did feedback and team time, and went to bed around 22:30. This was a crazy day, and each day changes depending on what is needed by the organization. We have taught English, played with kids, prayed over refugees, served the family with whom we are living, killed cockroaches, cleaned laundry, made our beds, filled buckets while the water is running, and other random tasks that occur each day.

Welcome to life on the field!
