I’ve successfully made it to my second country…YAH!
We arrived in Port-au-Prince, Haiti via bus Saturday evening and were picked up at the bus station by our contacts (Mission of Hope International). All 48 of us proceeded to pile on a small bus along with our packs to make our way to Grand Goave. Interesting ride, especially with the flat tire that incurred along the way. (I’m not kidding!) Welcome to the World Race!
We are staying on a compound of sorts…in our tents!
<Insert picture of my tent…except I can't, because the internet is so SLOW>
I can literally look outside my tent door and see the water…
<Imagine for yourself…a BEACH>
Once again, we are BLESSED! Our compound comes complete with a “shacoon” (what I can only describe as a HUGE gazebo), toilets and showers and a wonderful woman named Mary Eve that makes all our meals.
So far, this month of ministry has consisted of us working on a construction site helping to build a school and church. That is RIGHT, I am swinging a hammer all month! One of our biggest projects was helping to get the cement in place. Tuesday we unloaded 200,000 pounds of cement from two trucks (I'm not exaggerating!). Yesterday we helped to lay some of that cement…14 hours worth!
It has been such hard work, but I’ve so enjoyed it. We get to work along side some really REALLY hard working, extremely beastly Haitian men. We can’t understand their Creole and they can’t understand our English, but IT WORKS!
God has been giving me some supernatural strength this month. I keep expecting to be so tired and worn out at the end of the day (and I am), but the next morning I wake up feeling refreshed. It is such a blessing!
I already love Haiti so much and am learning to appreciate the culture. For instance, what we like to call the "hurry up and wait" concept. It always seems like we are being hurried somewhere just to sit and wait. We have a saying "WTH" – WELCOME TO HAITI
