So I have now been in Kenya squadleading the amazing Y squad for 3 weeks. It has truly been an awesome time getting to do work alongside this group. One thing I keep getting asked from people back home though, is what am I actually doing. That’s kind of a tricky question for a squadleader because my ministry changes not only week to week or even day by day but often moment by moment.
Officially, a squadleader is a World Race alumni who leads a squad for the first 4 months of their Race. They help organize the teams, the ministries and just generally look after all the Racers. So I travel around with my incredible co-leader and other half of the Dynamic Duo, Lucas Tillman, visiting each team. We’ve shared in their ministry days so I’ve done some door-to-door, a crusade, and even helped rid some feet of jiggers (these flea like bugs that dig into skin) as we’ve crossed Kenya from Nairobi to Siaya to Kakumega and now Busia. In that time, we’ve also organized next month’s contact/ministry sites, and of course we’ve looked after the health of our squad and team leaders.
That’s the official side of things. But on the ground level, things are a little different. Lucas and my ministry is really made up of little life-giving moments that happen every day. It’s listening to a girl share her testimony for the first time and crying with her. It’s calling someone out when they get pissed off because their “rights” aren’t being met. It’s phoning a team leader because she’s overwhelmed and reiterating that she is capable of this. It’s sitting with someone for ten minutes until they look you in the eye just so you can speak their identity in Christ over them. It’s showing the squad how to fight for, honor and love one another.
And it’s all these beautiful little moments that are really a squadleader’s ministry. And really, this is what all Believers are called to do and how we’re called to live- as constant lifegivers. So I’m sorry if I can’t give you a specific answer to what I’m doing right now, but I hope this explains a little bit about what I’m doing here in Kenya!
