In lovely Pretoria, South Africa, we have been spending our evenings sharing stories about our lives. We call it “Slice of Life” and we let each person have an evening where they get to tell their life story and testimony. Each person gets to talk as long as they need to talk and the rest of the group gets to ask questions once the person that is sharing is finished. It’s awesome. We are learning so much about each other and learning so much from each other.
You think you can tell your life story really quickly, but when you really start to think about it and think about all of the things that make you “you,” it becomes so complicated. You talk for about an hour and then as soon as you finish, you think oh my gosh… I forgot like half of my life!
We were so fortunate to hear one of our ministry contacts preach last Sunday at church in Mamelodi and he spoke about the power of a testimony. No matter how small your testimony may seem to you, your testimony will help someone else through whatever they are going through in their walk with God. He asked if anyone wanted to come up and share their testimony and a gentleman stood up to tell his story. Our contacts had taken this man to the doctor last week and prayed over him for healing. They didn’t know him at the time, but their actions spoke to him louder than words probably could have. He came to the church that Sunday because of what they had done for him and he said that he will be back with his family this Sunday. Pretty cool.
We were also so fortunate to have our contact’s son Francois, and his friend Mandy here this week with us and even more blessed that they were willing to share their stories with us. Both of them are leaders in a program called “Year of Your Life,” where they disciple other young adults who desire to grow closer to God- it seems like such a cool program. They are both awesome people and their stories were both really powerful. I learned so much from both of them and was really inspired by how connected they are to the Lord.
Slice of Life has brought up hard questions, vulnerability, tested trust, pushed our comfort zones, and taught us so much about ourselves, each other, and the way that God works in people’s lives. It has been amazing to hear the stories that shaped the people around us into the people that they are today.
Yeah, so God has been doing really cool things with Slice of Life. We are excited to delve into parts 2, 3, 4, and beyond!
