We have 11 girls crammed onto 9 mattresses in a small room for sleeping. We cover ourselves with bug nets every night and wake up in the morning counting our mosquito bites and praying against malaria. We haven’t showered since arriving here three days ago because well, frankly, we haven’t quite figured out how to carry water from the well, boil it, and bathe in a bucket. We can’t touch the sink water here, even to wash our hands because it is filled with typhoid. A couple times a day, the electricity goes out and we are pitched into blackness. We are learning to greatly appreciate our head lamps.

I am loving every minute of it.

And then last night, we were lying in bed and some of our heads began to itch. We quickly discovered that four of us of have lice. This means we spend our day off work shampooing and treating these little critters with Tea Tree Oil since there is no lice shampoo to be found. This means we must hand wash all of our clothes by drawing a five gallon bucket of water from the well. This means that we spend the next couple nights without blankets or pillows since they have to remain outside for a couple days to kill the bugs.

Welcome to Kenya. I am greatly enjoying my time here.  This month will be one of adventure, which I am excited about. I am also greatly looking forward to our ministry which begins tomorrow. The first week will be spent constructing an office building for the church we are working alongside. Once the building is built, we will begin door-to-door evangelism, hospital visits, and jail ministry.   I can’t wait to see the many ways God will work this month and will be sure to keep you all posted as much as possible.
