“For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others.”

This month I’ve been living in the Malealea Valley in Lesotho, Africa at a discipleship school called Africa 4 Jesus. On top of spreading the gospel, our ministry has been serving those in our village just as Jesus served others. We’ve been taking the time to get to know the people, serving them, and learning their stories, rather than just evangelizing. It has been a truly humbling experience serving these people who have never been served and being an example of how Jesus loves others for them. I haven’t had much access to wifi, so I haven’t been able to answer questions about what life is like here, so here’s a small glimpse into what my team has been doing.

This month we are living much like the people of our village do. We fetch our own water, have no electricity, no heat (which has been the most difficult for me since temperatures drop below freezing,) eat many of the same foods and sleep on the floor of our cinder block church. We have the most amazing host family that has made Lesotho feel like home, and we get to wake up to the most incredible view each day.

For those that have asked, this is what an average day looks like here:

6:30 AM – Wake up and get ready for the day

7:00 AM – Morning walk

7:30 AM -9 AM Quiet time to spend in the word and eat breakfast (alternating between maize porridge and oats)

9 AM – 12:30 PM – We walk half an hour to our village. We spend the next few hours serving people in whatever way they need. This could look like fetching water, cooking, cleaning, answering bible questions, offering support through prayer, or simply just getting to know them and keeping them company. We have met some truly incredible people and it has been so amazing getting to serve them.

12:30 PM – We walk back to the base for lunch (alternating between pb&j and tomato sandwiches.)

2:00PM – 4:30PM – Chores around the base. I have been with a group collecting rocks from a field to make even ground for a basketball court for the church. We’ve evened out a hill with these rocks, filled it with dirt, and the next step will be to add concrete. I’ve also helped with smaller projects such as repainting the outside of the on base preschool.

6:00 PM – Dinner

7:00 PM – Team Time

9:30 PM – Lights out. We have a small amount of solar power for lights in the church at night.

I’ll be posting more blogs of specific experiences when I have the opportunity to access wifi again! On a side note, if you feel led, I have around $500 to raise to reach my next deadline at the end of the month. Forever thankful for everyone’s support!
