My mom and I have been a pair forever.
I grew up with her as a single mom, working two jobs to pay for my love
of dance. I wasn’t a one class per week
girl either, I danced 4-5 hours every night, 5 nights a week at Birmingham
Dance Theater in Vestavia. Needless to
say, my mom had to work hard!
When I was 10, my mother married Randall Henderson and I gained a step
brother and step sister. If I’m honest,
which I am, I did not really like the idea of acquiring new family members. However, we all learned to love one
another. Merging families can be
difficult, but we have embraced our similarities and tolerated our
differences.

Randall with Elizabeth at Christmas
As an adult I really enjoy my visits with David and Elizabeth. The last
time I saw them was the day after New Years.
We celebrated New Year’s at the Moon Pie Drop in Mobile, Alabama. It was wonderful. We explored the city, had fresh seafood
dinner, watched a parade with the cupcake like Mobile Belles, then saw Three
Dog Night in concert! Finally, the
spotlight was on the Famous Mobile snack creation: the Moon Pie. It was a fun night with family…

That was eight months ago. Though I
love my stepbrother and sister, we don’t often talk when we’re not
together. Though with the invention of
facebook and my internet in India, I’ve had more contact with them this month
than any other. Just yesterday David
posted a comment that made me really miss him and our strongest family
connection: “are you going to be home for football?” ….Heat
Ache! I’m not normally home for games,
but I am in the United States and have access to tv, radio or internet on which
to simulate being at the games.

Now, September 8th, college football has already started and
Alabama has gotten off to an explosive start!
My mom even sent me a picture of her at the first game of the
season. She never takes pictures, so
that just proves what a big deal football is to our family. We are connected by
the University of Alabama wins and losses (God forbid).
I’m looking forward to returning home to see my family, all of my
family. They all hold a special place in
my heart and I have greater appreciation for them as well as for my role and
responsibilities as a sister and child of God.
ROLL TIDE ROLL!
