I love reading the bible. I love hearing the miracle stories. I love it when Jesus calls the twelve disciples together in Luke 9:1-2 and “[gives] them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, and …preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.” I do believe God still does all those things today, but I couldn’t honesty believe that He would give me His authority and power to do it.
Tiffany Blount, a racer from R-squad happened to be sharing her experiences of seeing God’s healing power with me at launch. She mentioned three things she would pray to God for healing over a person:
- God’s Word is living so use scripture when praying over someone.
- Always pray over someone in Jesus’ name.
- God’s timing is good and just.
Listening to these wise words from someone who’s seen God move from the age of 14, allowed me to grow a little in my confidence in God’s power in healing through me.
On our last day of launch, we had an ‘Ask The Lord’ session. We prayed and listened to God and allowed Him to guide our team to wherever He wanted us to go and do whatever He wanted to us to do. After following a bunch of different directions, we believed God was guiding one of our team mates Emily, towards an American flag. We walked towards a Boys and Girls Club and opposite the Club was a house with an American flag flying in front. Emily and I joked around about whether this was the flag God had shown her.

Our team leader Shelby, decided to stop at the Boys and Girls Club and pray for the kids. While we were praying, a part of me wanted to pray for the house that was opposite us. Instead of focusing my attention on praying, I opened my eyes and found that Emily had walked towards the house. After praying, I asked Emily what she was feeling. She shared that she had felt convicted to go to the house. (Read emilyzion.theworldrace.org for how God convicted her.)
We decided that Susan (another teammate), Emily and I would go to the house. We asked God to give us words as we approached the house. We knocked and a lady named Lilly appeared. Emily introduced us and mentioned we were walking in the neighbourhood and felt like we could pray for someone in the house. Crazily enough, Lilly said there was; her younger sister Elizabeth.
We found out that her sister was currently battling cancer, diabetes and has atrial fibrillation. She had been hospitalized for over a month and had originally been healthy prior to the diagnosis. That coming Monday, Elizabeth was going to have a medical appointment that would determine if she would need an additional round of chemotherapy. In addition, Lilly had decided to retire three years early so she could take care of her.
The Holy Spirit (which I didn’t know at the time) encouraged me to ask whether Elizabeth was living at her place. After receiving confirmation, I asked whether we could meet and pray over her, and surprisingly, Lilly said it was okay.
We walked into her house and found Elizabeth lying in her hospital bed; breathing through an oxygen tube. We introduced ourselves and asked if we could pray for her. We all held Elizabeth’s hand and started praying one by one. Emily went first, Susan went next and then it was my turn. Remembering the three things Tiffany shared, I prayed.
By the end of our prayer, I asked whether Lilly had a way to keep in touch and see how Elizabeth was doing. Unfortunately, she didn’t, but invited us to come and visit anytime. We said our goodbyes and then walked towards the rest of our group. We all walked down the street and we excitedly shared with them what had happened. We couldn’t believe God would actually lead us to that house. It was amazing.
