The Meat Log:

So there are a lot of preparations continually being made in my heart as we approach our departure for Thailand. There is also a lesser known preparation occurring in my stomach. I am back on meat after quite a hiatus.
As background: in seventh grade little Sarah (well not so little… it was the awkward years) decided that she didn’t want to eat meat to “save animals.” However, my Mom decided that we weren’t prepared as a family to be totally submerged in the world of alternative protein sources so I needed to make some choices. As the cuter and furrier animals, Pigs and Cows were spared. Chickens and Fish were not so fortunate due to their large numbers and impersonal nature. So that’s my story… “no mammals” since seventh grade.
Since April I have been reintegrating into the meat world, culminating in attending The Festival of Meats, (an annual event my friends started which honors meat and all it’s deliciousness).
Getting back on meat seemed like a smart thing to do so I wouldn’t experience stomach readjustments overseas (i will spare you the details). As I thought more about it, I think this has been a lesson in loving people and accepting these new cultures we will be entering. When we go to Africa and a woman decides to serve the family goat for dinner… I want to appreciate that gesture and not struggle with explaining that I don’t eat mammals. To me that screams “I’m American and have money so I pick and chose what I eat.”
God just wants us to love other people, and if eating a slab of meat conveys that love… I’m in.
Final note… I will amending some blogs with a “meat log” at the bottom. The words will be written in Red and I think I will be including interesting foods.
Meat log from the Festival of Meats:
Pork chops, pork loin, ribs, steak, kosher hot dogs wrapped in bacon (we won’t go there), swordfish (i think?) and alligator.
