My squad and I flew into Medellín, Colombia to begin our Race. We spent one night in Medellin in a ministry called Ciudad Refugio, a Christ-centered ministry that reaches out to the homeless and drug-addicted men and women of Medellín and provides them with the opportunity to get clean and learn that they have a hope, purpose, and love in Christ that drugs, alcohol, and living on the streets cannot provide them.
I knew my first night at Ciudad Refugio that the Spirit of the Lord was there and God was doing something special.
As you know, my team and I went to San Andrés for the month and spent our time on a beautiful island watching God work within and around us.
At the end of our month we were blessed with the opportunity to go back and stay in Ciudad Refugio for two days too short.
God gave me that same, overwhelming feeling as soon as I stepped in the door.
While at Ciudad Refugio we were able to see how distinctively beautiful Medellín is. We were able to try local foods and meet many natives of the city. We were able to learn a drama and present it to kids to plant seeds of the Gospel and love of Christ in their lives. We were able to attend a church service for the homeless men who sleep in the bottom floor of the foundation at nights for a safe place of refuge from the streets that are trying to tear them down.
This service changed everything for me.
The homeless men, the men who are in the rehabilitation program, and us world racers all worshipped the same God together. We all listened to the word of God breath life together. I saw men, who have seen some of the darkest places of this world, clinging to their Bible and reach for God knowing that His presence and love are all they truly need. I heard God speak love over His people. I heard Him say that only He could be enough for them and for me.
I’m not sure what my future holds after the race or for the rest of my life, but for now I pray that the Lord brings me back to this ministry in this city because I want to be apart of that “something special”.
You are magnificently loved,
Sara
