“. . . they. . . prayed, they
placed their hands on them and sent them off.
– Acts 13:3 (NIV)

On September 7, 2008, my
spiritual home & family these past 7 years – Open Door Presbyterian Church
– commissioned for the World Race.  To those of you who attended the 9:25
a.m. service that Sunday – I apologize for the bout of verbal diarrhea.
Thank you for loving and listening to me anyway.

Thank you, Sarah, Jerry
and Pastor Dan for hosting a wonderful lunch/dinner later that afternoon and
thank you everyone who came – during the service and the reception – for
praying for me. I spent my last night in northern Virginia eating dinner
and having tea and coffee and good conversation, being prayed for, and playing
some Rock Band 2.   It’s been 21 days since I got commissioned, and I
was sent off early in the morning before the sun was up with Sarah’s and pastor
Dan’s prayers.

As excited as I am for
the G-squad to be my church, for at least this year, and team Dunamis my small
group, as it were, I would be remiss to acknowledge and thank ODPC for all that
she’s been to and done for me.  Throughout 2006-2007, the regional small
groups at ODPC studied the book of Hebrews.  The summer of 2007 was one
full of small convictions which added up into a burden to move; I guess you
could call that “momentum.”

One weekend, I decided to
fill out the “quick” application to the World Race. I wasn’t
sure if I was meant for the World Race. I thought that the 15 minutes I
spent answering those few questions was as far as I’d go, and well, at least I
could say that I tried.

A year ago, I concluded
my bio with how I applied for and was accepted for the World Race.  I can
hardly believe that this year of waiting has come down to 24 hours.  When
I think of all the people who are standing behind me, partnering with me in
this radical act of obedience, I am just as incredulous.

It’s one
thing for one person, a little person at that, to be called out of her
comfortable yuppie lifestyle and into the World Race – to live in community, 24
hours a day, 7 days a week for 11 months, with 50+ people she just met a couple
months ago, restrict her wardrobe to 7 tops and bottoms, be housed by a large
piece of nylon and carry what she needs in a 72L backpack and daypack.
It’s one to thing for me to surrender everything to follow wherever He leads
and do and be all that Jesus says to do and be.

It’s
quite another to hope that a whole congregation would partner with me and share
in my radical vision.  Yet, ODPC has accepted the invitation to invest in
this vision with me, with as much enthusiasm and hope and excitement.
This year has been one filled with wonder, dreaming, preparing and
anticipation; I’m waking up not from the dream, but stirring from
slumber into reality.

This
small movement gained so much momentum that I feel like I’m going to
stumble.  Thank you for stepping out in faith with me, ODPC as I join a
bunch of fellow Pauls and Barnabases to extend God’s grace all over the world.
