as a follow up to my recent treatises pleading for your support for my teammates, i wanted to let you know that i’ve passed on the support i had received from a friend to my teammate brenda, squadmate lindsay heston, and squad leader allison, which should be effective tomorrow.

earlier today, i rather reluctantly contacted ijm, the mocha club, cti music ministries, aim (oh jeff, i’m sorry!!!), and compassion international asking them to suspend my giving for the year or so i’ll be on the race.  i really thought i could be sent and still support other ministries but i can’t.  i’ll make my last student and car loan payments (for a year) and as much of my credit card balance off with my last paycheck.

months ago, i had contemplated draining my 401k (which i haven’t contributed to since i’ve opened – all employer’s contribution, baby) to clear my debt.  wouldn’t you know events of recent days in the financial sector would make this a rather unsavory option.  so the rest i trust God to provide.  contact me if God’s calling you to be a part of that providence.

well, let me know what you think – should i drain my 401k anyway?  it’s not for me to assume i’ll live long enough to “retire” so why hold onto money in such a manner?  i welcome your feedback.

without further ado. . .

there’s a lot of us, so please go here and look for ways you can stand in the gap.  let me highlight these people:
and these ministries:
  • International Justice Mission – a powerful agent of hope and justice, this organization has renewed my “faith” in the legal and law-enforcement professions.  seriously, i can’t think of a better reason to go into law – they’re why i didn’t close the door on that possibility.
  • Mocha Club – “redefining the coffee break”, for the cost of two drinks from a major coffee chain, in africa, you can feed 1 person for 1 month, or educate 2 kids for 1 school term, or save 1 person from malaria or provide clean water for 7 people for 1 year.  join the likes of dave barnes and matt wertz in making $7 go a long way (even in this uncertain economy).
  • CTI Music Ministries – mobilizing young musicians to spread the gospel.  these young men and women give up a summer (sometimes three!) or a year (or two!) to share the good news of Jesus – partnering with Youth for Christ International and Youth With a Mission – and mobilize youth here in the U.S. to fulfill the great commission.  these people could very well use that time to grow their talent for their own sake, but they instead choose to make great the name of Jesus.  it’s like american idol but the staff are way nicer and cooler than simon, randy and paula AND it’s all about Jesus.
  • Compassion International – $32 a month provides food, clothing, and education and meets other needs of a boy or girl in asia, africa or the americas.  i’ve been supporting my friend from honduras, who turns 14 next week, for two years.  though i could’ve done a better job of keeping in touch with him, it was difficult nevertheless to let him go.  compassion faithfully does its part to help boys and girls around the world realize their potential by providing their basic needs.  maybe one of you can sponsor my friend for me. . .
let’s put our money where our hearts ought to be – the poor, the oppressed, the widow, the orphan, those who haven’t met Jesus, the least of these – where God already is.

’cause as it turns out these days, wall street doesn’t look like that place.

for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
