I entitled this blog post “The World’s Oldest Profession”. and I know what you’re thinking. And that is so not what I mean. Come on, it’s Mother’s Day, what do you think I’m talking about?
Of course I’m talking about the full-time job that is mothering. I mean, I’ve never actually been employed in the art of mothering, but I’ve seen the job description and it seems fairly difficult. And yet women have been working in the motherhood department since the beginning of people.
But what exactly constitutes being a “mother”?
A mother is someone who tells you to clean your room and wash the dishes. Someone who makes your doctor’s appointments (even when you’re almost twenty years old) and reminds you about them because she loves you and wants you to be healthy and knows you’re highly irresponsible. A mother is someone who will argue with you until you’re both blue in the face even though you both know she will win. A mother is someone who will take pride in even your smallest accomplishments, and someone who will love you even at your most un-loveable-est.
Mothers are people who receive grossly unjust amounts of ingratitude and attitude on a daily basis and yet love us regardless. Mothers are people who deal out grace by the bucketful in examples of Christ-like love. And when it comes down to it, mothers are people who really are deeply appreciated for all the things they do, small and large.
So thank you. You really are loved and appreciated, even if I suck at showing it most of the time.
