I speak a little bit of Spanish, just enough to get me by in most shallow conversations at least. So I’m thankful when I have my teammates Isaac and Ryan around to help me translate what our friends are saying to us here in Nicaragua. However, what I read just the other day in Psalms was so blatantly clear I couldn’t miss it. Psalm 47:6-7 “Sing praises to God, sing praises; sing praises to our King, sing praises. For God is the King of all the earth; sing to him a psalm of praise.”
The Sons of Korah (the authors of this psalm) were so clear that we don’t need a translation to figure this one out. We are to praise the God of the universe. We are to sing praises to our King.
Why, you ask?
Because he has done great things for us? No. Because he saved us from our own filth in sin? Nope.
The psalmists here don’t say praise God because of what he has done for us, or me. Verse six says “For God is the King of ALL the earth, sing to him a psalm of praise.”
Should we praise him for the great things he has done in our lives? Absolutely. Should we praise him because he saved us? You betcha.
However, that becomes an issue when those are the only times we praise Him. What this Psalm reminded me of was that God deserves ALL of our praised regardless.
HE
IS
GOD!!!!
KING over all the earth!
That right there alone is enough to sing praises to his name; but then we add in that he reconciled us to himself through Jesus and BOOM He is completely worthy of endless praise; whether we get the job or not, whether we get the house we put a bid in for or not, whether he heals us of something or not…
Catch my drift?
We need no other reason.
So sing today, sing to your creator, the God of the universe that desires a relationship with you. Sing praises to Him because of who He is, and may He continue to radically love and encounter you in new ways.
