So what does a “normal” workday in Michigan look like for you Rusty?
This is definitely a question I’ve gotten over the last few months. So hopefully I can give ya’ll some insight.

Recruiting
One thing I spend a lot of time doing is talking with potential World Racers – we call them “inquiries.” These “inquiries” come to us by way of our website. Basically, I call these folks up and answer any questions they may have about the World Race. It’s also a chance for me to share what God has done in my life through this program. My goal is to help them get to the application process – at which point our mobilization team takes over.
Pastoring
I work with tons of World Race parents helping them get connected with each other. The thing we want to see happen from these connections is community. That way the parents can turn to each other for support, encouragement of comfort during the time their kids are on the race. And in doing so, better support their child in the field. So I’m in constant contact with parents – answering questions, praying for them, offering support and any other advice or wisdom I can pass along.
Equipping
This role pretty much applies to training camp. I lead the men’s retreat and minister to the guys at camp. However, between camps I do try to spend time helping those guys get ready for launch. You see, there are usually a couple months between camp and launch, so during that time I answer questions, pass along advice or encouragement. I also spend a little bit of time preparing for the retreat, and looking for ways to make it better.
Support Raising
This is a never ending process and can look a lot of different ways. Ericka and I both spend lots of time writing thank you notes, checking in with supporters, building relationships, and working on support letters and other forms of ‘direct asks’ for money. Believe it or not, it’s a process I enjoy. It’s amazing how well you get to know people when they are investing in your ministry. However, the downside is that I’m constantly in need of support – making this a permanent part of my job. Click here to donate.
Miscellaneous
These are all the other things I do that do not fit in the above categories – like interviewing World Race applicants, busy work and other random duties.
So there you have it! This is how I spend my days. And the ‘end in mind’ for me – meaning my goal – is to see the lives of people in the nations changed, as well as our participants. So I do that through recruiting people to get involved, equipping them to do the work, and then helping to create a support network back home for the racer.
