A is for Apple a-a-apple…

B is for Ball b-b-ball…

Oh, hello there.  Do you want an idea of what I’ve been up to?  Well, it has been a lot like this.  Letter songs, letter games, letter crafts, letter videos…you get the idea.

Last month I taught kindergarten in Siem Reap Cambodia at a school called Samuel House.  My team and I were full time teachers.  We rode our bikes to school every day at 8:00 and stayed until 4:00.  I taught a morning English class and an afternoon English class.  There were 15 rambunctious children in my morning class.  My afternoon class had 5 students who started off quiet and shy, but by the end of the month were just as rowdy as my morning students.  At first it was a lot to handle…especially since I had never taught before.  But a week in, I found myself enjoying going to school each day.  I looked forward to my kids greeting me when I arrived in the morning, yelling “Teacha! Teacha!”.  And by the end of the month when my students said their last “Goodbye Teacha” I found myself tearing up.  Those little kiddos, as crazy as they were, wiggled their way into my heart and I will never forget them.  Here are some pics of my students in Cambodia!

This month, in Malaysia, I am also teaching English.  We are at a community center in the province of Kelantan.  Even though I am doing the same thing, it’s a lot different teaching classes at a community center instead of a full time school.  Since classes are only in the afternoons or evenings, our days aren’t as busy with teaching.  We have still found ways to keep busy, however.  Our hosts have moved to a new home this month and are also preparing to move their center to a new location.  The other day we were able to help them load up the moving truck with their furniture and unpack it at their new place.  We also have been packing up school items at the old center where we have been staying in preparation for the move to the new center.  Yesterday we were also able to clean out the new center and get it all ready to move stuff in!

Had you told me a year ago I would ever be teaching kindergarten, I would have said “You’re crazy!”.  And crazy enough, while it was uncomfortable in the beginning, I have actually grown to enjoy it!  Am I considering a career change in the near future?  Absolutely not, but there is something very fulfilling about teaching a child and knowing that you are impacting this child’s life for the better.  Mad props to all the teachers out there!

Hope you enjoyed this little update of what I’ve been doing the last couple of months.  As some of you know, my time here on the field is wrapping up soon.  I would appreciate your prayers as I finish up my time here on the Race and then transition back home!

God Bless!

Rita
