Dominican Life
We arrived in the DR on January 10th. We are staying in a house that the church maintains so that mission groups can come and work with the church. Though they have had other groups come and stay here, we are the first Worldrace group to come.
There are many simple things that we had to adjust too. Things that in the states we take for granted. Here are some simple rules to abide by.
1. Don’t drink the water out of the tap, EVER. You can use it to cook but only if you boil it. We buy large Culligan like jugs of water for drinking for less than a dollar each.
2. NEVER throw toilet paper in the toilet for fear of clogging it and flooding the house. Their pluming just can’t handle it.
3. Wash/rinse off your dishes after taking them out of the cupboard and before you use them because you don’t know what kind of bugs have crawled on them while in the cabinet.
4. Conserve resources: Water and electricity are very expensive so always turn off things that you are not using. They even like us to turn off the water pump at night to help conserve energy.
So far we have found the people here to be very nice. We have met several members of the church that we are going to be working with. The church is called Iglesia Communidad Multicultural ( Community Multicultural Church) They focus on Loving God, Loving People, and Making Disciples. You can visit their website at www.icm.do. This church emphasizes being multicultural because the want to invite people of all nationalities, Haitians and Dominicans alike.
Our work here so far has been going to people’s homes and inviting them to church. We also have been praying for them and sharing scripture with them. We have been received pretty well.
We hope to share more with you as time goes on. We have limited internet access so we wont be able to communicate often.
