NASCAR season is in full swing, and here in Charlotte we have recently been graced with the crazy race day antics. I had the chance to experience some of this hype a couple of weeks ago and I am completely won over to the sport, and yes… I said sport. Now, to you skeptics out there who can’t in the least bit find the fun or purpose in going around in circles all day (400 to be exact) stick with me as I try to pull some relevance from this.
After the high pitched, but of course wonderful, performance of the national anthem there is always the undying command to “Start your engines!”. With the green flag the drivers are off and flying around the track at a beautiful 150 mi/hr. Within laps there is sure to be a wreck of some kind and the caution is up and the pace car is sent out. This pace car sets the speed for the time being and allows the cars to pit for gas/etc.

“Let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith.” Hebrews 12:1-2
Now, everyone sets a pace with their life, but what does our pace depend on? I know for myself my pace depends on how much “gas” I put in my car, how much time and energy I put into meeting with and listening to God. When I don’t put that fuel into my daily life I struggle to make it to the end of my day without having to get out of my car and push. Lately I’ve had the chance to put more time aside for meeting with God and it has truly been a smoother ride. It’s not that the circumstances are perfect, in fact its quite the opposite, but its the fact that I’ve had more meetings, dare I say more “pit stops”, where the communication allows me to trust His pace for my life. What is determining the pace of your life? Are you going too fast? too slow? Is your speed causing you to wreck?
“Don’t grieve God. Don’t break his heart. His Holy Spirit, moving and breathing in you, is the most intimate part of your life, making you fit for himself. Don’t take such a gift for granted.” Ephesians 4:30
