Everyday brings us one step closer to our departure on the World Race, and even thinking about it makes me anxious for what is to come…but are these coming months really just meant to be spent in anticipation of what is to come? It occurred to me today, as it does often, that our time here is unknown and fleeting. Will we get another year, another month, or another day??? And since I am certainly not the one with the answer to this question I find myself wondering, “What did I do with my
today?”

Most of the time, I find that the answer to this question is disappointing and well, frankly, self-centered. Sometimes I feel like my day will be justified if I can say, “I went to church,” or “I read my bible,” but in the end I still did not apply anything or DO something. In James it says,

Don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like.”
(James 1:22-24) So, it seems to me that everyday we are given two choices, to listen, or to listen
and obey.

Have you ever been at a sports game sitting on the sidelines and noticed you were “playing the ref” or judging the calls? I do this all the time, and most of the time I become very critical of the players and their performance on the field thinking… “He should have jumped higher,” “He could have thrown harder,” “He should have caught that!” However, being the sideline critic, did I ever
DO anything to change the outcome of the game? Never.

So what do we
DO? Matthew 7:12 says,
“Ask yourself what you want people to do for you, then grab the initiative and do it for them.” I have a close friend who is doing just that right now. I’ve known Melissa for years and recently she has taken on a “Do Something Now” project that involves building a well in Africa that will provide clean water for a whole village.
80% of all deaths in developing countries come from water borne illnesses. You can join her in this project by going to her website:

So, what will I do with my
today? I’m so glad you asked!

I’m going to live in the here and now, I’m going to give my entire attention to what God is doing now, (Matthew 6:34) I’m going to begin taking action; obeying what God is saying, And I’m going to start with my
TODAY.

Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.

Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at his feet,
or we’ll walk by his side in the way;
what he says we will do, where he sends we will go;
never fear, only trust and obey.
