The other day we had the opportunity to sit under the teaching of a man named David who has started a network called Dreams InDeed. It is an amazing organization, so click on the name to head to their website.
He spoke to us on what it looks like to be a servant leader. Everything that he said struck a chord within me.
Truth was being spoken and I want to think, pray and apply what he spoke on.
Here are my notes:
Servant Leader– a servant of Jesus Christ entrusted by Him with a mission, to steward the mission and resources, and to shepherd people.
What does a servant need to know to make it to the end?
John 13:1- "It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end."
#1. Know my finish line. My timing. The race is not over yet. I can make it to the end time wise, but how can I serve to my full capacity?
Jesus knew his time had come.
#2. Love my people.
-Who is God calling me to love?
Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.
#3. Know my authority.
– a servant does not operate in a place of weakness. My authority is in
the power of Jesus
John 13:3a-"Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power."
#4.Know my origin.
– we have been brought here by God. I am a citizen of a kingdom that
cannot be shaken.
John 13:3b- "..and he had come from God.."
#5. Know my destiny.
– I will live with God forever. I am digging deeper into the heart of God.
That is where I will find joy.
John13:3b-".. and was returning to God.."
So, to be a servant as Jesus was, what do I need to do?
(John 13:4-5,12: As Jesus was preparing to wash the disciples feet)
Get up. (he got up)
-do something! Get off of my butt.
Lay aside. (took of his outer clothing)
-die to myself. I am not that important. Lay aside my education, my skills
and my need for attention.
Pick up my tools. (wrapped a towel around his waist)
– what do I need?
Put them on.
– get them
Prepare. (poured water into a basin)
– get ready. Don't think things will get ready by themselves.
Get our hands dirty. (washed the disciples feet)
– get to work. Actually do what I set out to do.
Finish the job. (he finished washing their feet, put on his clothes and returned to his place)
– complete what he has called me to do.
Who is all of this for?
2 Corinthians 4:5-
"For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for JESUS' sake."
If I do all of this for people, I will get burnt out, but if I work for the Lord, he will continue to fill me up. It is all for the sake of Jesus.
I long to be a servant leader. To serve Christ by serving his people. I am currently through what that looks like in this capacity.
What does it look like in your life?
