A Day in My Life…
Every day on the race looks different… But I wanted to share today. What happened, what I did, and the "normals" of life here on the race. Right now I am living in a little Romania village called Sistarovat. My team is working with and staying at 7th Spring Christian Camp. There is a cottage at the camp that has 4 bedrooms, a living room, and a kitchen. Our ministry is preparing the camp for the summer by doing yard/garden work, light construction, and painting. So today…
Monday, March 19, 2012.
… started at 7:30am. I had some excellent Jesus time and journal time before everyone else woke up. It's my peace. I fixed me a cup of coffee with a dash of cinnamon and a drop of milk… And it reminded me of the Dominican Republic. Sooo good. Great way to start the morning. Coffee in one hand and the Bible in the other. Breakfast was around 9am (cereal) and our work day started at 10am.
Today we were plowing the "field' by hand. Grab a hoe or a rake and get started. I felt like a farmer, all I needed was some overalls. We worked and worked on clearing out the fields. The boys cut down trees and chopped firewood. Everyone did their task at hand and we accomplished a lot. I had a hoe and was cutting the dead hay/grass and toiling the land. It was good exercise, that is for sure.
Lunch break at 12:30. Dania and I decided to exercise while lunch was being prepared. Only so many people can cook and fit in the kitchen. We ran the stairs and around the 'mansion' three times. Run more stairs…Lots and lots of stairs…. My calves are going to feel that tomorrow.
We had lunch around 1:15pm which consisted of rice and Mexican Chili… It was actually really good. We ate outside on the picnic tables. Today was beautiful day… Sunshine with temps in the upper 60s and lower 70s.
2pm Grocery shopping! There is an actual town that is about 15 minutes away from us. Each Monday a few people go grocery shopping for the food for the week. Today it was me, Keeley, and Ben John who went into town.
-We go to the vegetable market, and always buy from the same lady. She has an excellent selection and good prices. The staple vegetables are potatoes, carrots, and onions… There is a different stand with lots of fresh fruits. We always get apples, oranges, and bananas. Trying to stay healthy by having fruit in our house.
– Meat market is next where we get our meat for the week. Now by meat market I mean pork market. They only sell pig here. You have the pig head, the pig ears, the liver, the heart…. Everything. Just take your pick on which body part you want. Beef is a rarity and very expensive. So today we got sausage and ground pork and cheese.
-Grocery store is last… Culture shock. It's a legit grocery store with most things we need in it. There are two different aisles. Some norms of eating are pasta, rice, cereal, pancake mix, bread, seasonings and cookies… They don't have a lot of boxed or canned things sooo no cream of chicken soup or canned vegetables or chocolate chips, etc.
There is an elderly lady named Marischa who lives in town. Today we picked her up and took her into town for groceries. She is around 95 years old.
4pm Went over to Marishca's son's house to visit after we were done grocery shopping. We had coffee and sat outside and chatted. It was a lovely afternoon and good coffee.
4:45pm Loaded up bricks, from her son's house, to make a walk way for her.
5:15pm Went to the farm because Mahai (our contact/translator for the month) wanted to buy a new rooster. Sadly he was unable to get it. There were lots of baby lambs on the farm… So precious.
5:45 We made it back home! Unload all the groceries and organize.
6pm Sophia, our elderly neighbor, came over with milk! Sophia has a big cow and the cow is pregnant. But she milks her cow daily and we buy all of our milk from her. Fresh milk! It's normally still warm, and one time it came in a tin bucket/pale. Fun stuff. We actually get calcium this month so taking advantage of that while we have it.
6pm – Chill Time till dinner
7:30pm Dinner Time which tonight was over a camp fire. Well massive bonfire… We had hotdogs, chips, and raw carrots. Good ole American meal. The bonfire was to prepare the fields for farming sooo burning the dead grass and hay and branches.
9pm Apple Crisp time. Yum. Cut up an apple and put cinnamon sugar, oats, and chocolate all in an aluminum foil packet to put over the fire to cook. It turned out really good.
10:30pm Come in from the bonfire, shower, and journal. Go to bed around midnight. It was a good day, a long day, a fun day! I love it here.
