Travel Day #1: Fort Lauderdale to Dominican Republic
Friday, January 13, 2012 We all made it safely to the Dominican Republic and I wanted to share a little of my travel day with you. 🙂 ohhh and travel days are quite an adventure.
5:00am Wake Up! Good morning… Time to roll up your sleeping bags and sleeping mats to pack up.
5:30am Cleaning time! A Romanian Baptist Church generously hosted three world race squads (sooo 130 young adults) for the week of training before leaving the country for a year. And we wanted to leave the church in the awesome condition that we found it in… So clean, vacuum, mop, etc,
6:00am Morning Hike! We had to hike from the church to the bus station which was a half a mile away with our hiking backpacks and our daypacks. Ohhhh it was a sight to see considering there were 43 of us.
6:45am Bus Ride! Public transportation is the best… Well the ppl weren't too excited to see us considering all of our luggage. We kinda took up 2 seats due to our backpacks. We took the bus to the train station.
7:45am Train Ride! To the Miami airport. The train ride was actually really nice and peaceful.
8:20am Shuttle to the airport! Ummm all 43 of us fit on the one shuttle. Crazy. Jammed in there… Standing, sitting, and getting really close to each other right from the beginning.
8:45am We made it to the airport!!! Got through security at 11:30am.
2:10pm Plane Ride to Santo Domingo! Good flight… I slept.
5:30pm Arrive!! And got through customs and immigration. All of our luggage arrived. Praise God!
6:30pm Get my WR credit card eaten by the ATM machine. Sooo first official day on the race… I lost my credit card with all my team money on it. Sad day… Thankfully I was able to use a team leader card.
7:30pm Bus Ride to San Juan! (3 hours on a bus with all our packs) and one of my teammates got sick.
10:45pm Truck Ride to Padre de las Casas. Soooo little white truck took my team and team monarch up to the mountain village. That's 13 of us, the driver, and 2 translators with all of our packs and daypacks on/in one truck…. Crazy. And yes I sat on top of all the packs in the bed of the truck. It was fun… And night was clear and cool and the stars were beautiful.
12:00 (midnight) Arrive! We have a house to stay at for the night before continuing the journey up the mountain the next day to las Laguna.
What a day! God is good. We all made it to the Dominican Republic safe and sound.
